Adoptive cell immunotherapy
This type of cell therapy consists of specialized immune cells that have been
genetically altered to target specific tumors or other abnormal cells in the body.
They can be engineered to recognize a certain antigen on the surface of cancer cells
or can be selectively isolated from a patient’s tumor and grown in large numbers in
the laboratory before being infused back into the patient.
These specialized immune cells are often referred to as adoptive T cells, adoptive B
cells, or chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells. In the case of CAR T cells, a
patient’s own T cells that are engineered to recognize a particular protein on tumors
